Prado lies in the far south of Bahia, on the stretch of shoreline known as the Costa do Descobrimento, the Discovery Coast, where the Portuguese first reached Brazil in 1500. The town sits at the mouth of the Jucuruçu River, and its streets fill the narrow ground between the river and the open Atlantic.
On a map, the coastline is the dominant feature: a long, almost straight edge that runs north and south from the town, with the river cutting in from the west. The municipality stretches along the coast and includes the beach village of Cumuruxatiba to the south.
