Raisen lies in central Madhya Pradesh, a short drive northeast of Bhopal, and serves as the headquarters of the district that bears its name. The town is defined by a single dramatic feature: a long, flat-topped sandstone hill rising directly above the streets, its summit enclosed by the walls of Raisen Fort. From above, the hill forms an elongated open shape beside the town.
The fort dates back several centuries and holds the remains of palaces, water tanks and gateways spread across the hilltop, reached by a path climbing from the town below. The streets of Raisen gather along the base of the hill and extend outward along the main roads, with fields and scrubland opening beyond the last houses.
The district is also home to Sanchi, whose Buddhist stupas are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, placing the area on many routes through central India. A Raisen map poster sets the compact town against the broad mass of the fort hill, a composition that is as much about landform as about streets.
