Rubanda is in south-western Uganda, in the Kigezi highlands near the borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This is some of the steepest farmed land in East Africa. Hills rise one after another, and their slopes are cut into terraces that give the landscape a distinctive ribbed look.
From above, the town is small and follows the shape of the land. Its streets gather where the ground allows, and roads climb and wind to reach neighbouring valleys and villages. On a map, those curves are the clearest sign of how steep the country is.
