Samos lies in the eastern Aegean, so close to Turkey that the mainland is clearly visible from much of its coast. The narrow Mycale Strait separates the island's eastern tip from the Anatolian shore. From above, Samos is elongated from east to west and mountainous, with roads following the coast and winding over the ridges between small valleys.
Two mountain masses dominate the island. Mount Kerkis rises in the west, the highest point, and Mount Ampelos stands in the centre, its slopes covered with vineyards that produce the island's well-known sweet Muscat wine. The main town and port, also called Samos or Vathy, sits at the head of a deep bay on the north coast.
A Samos map poster connects geography with ancient history. The island is the birthplace of Pythagoras, and the town of Pythagoreio on the south coast is named after him. Nearby is the Tunnel of Eupalinos, an aqueduct dug through a hill in the sixth century BC from both ends at once. The tunnel and the Heraion sanctuary are listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
