Samrāla is a town in the Ludhiana district of Punjab. It sits on the route between Ludhiana and Chandigarh. The land around it is the flat, intensively farmed plain that has made Punjab one of India's main grain-producing regions. On a map, the town is a dense cluster of streets surrounded by rectangular field boundaries and village roads running nearly straight across open ground.
The older core is a tight tangle of lanes around its bazaars. Newer housing and institutions spread outward along the main roads in a looser pattern. Irrigation channels and minor roads cut through the countryside at regular intervals, and small villages appear as separate knots of lines. The contrast between the busy centre and the geometric farmland around it is what gives the map its structure.
