Sanary-sur-Mer lies on the Var coast between Bandol and Toulon. At its centre is a small, almost enclosed harbour, lined with a promenade and brightly painted façades and still home to many traditional wooden fishing boats known as pointus. A medieval tower stands by the waterfront, one of the oldest buildings in town.
In the 1930s Sanary became a refuge for German and Austrian writers in exile, including Thomas Mann, Lion Feuchtwanger and Bertolt Brecht, and Aldous Huxley also lived there. Beyond the old centre, streets climb gently into hills covered in villas, pines and gardens, with beaches and rocky coves along the shore.
