Santiago is one of the urban districts that together make up the city of Cusco, and it covers much of the southwestern side of the valley. On a map, the Huatanay river and the main roads run along the valley floor, and the streets climb away from them onto the slopes. The higher the neighbourhoods sit, the more their streets bend to follow the ground.
The district takes its name from the colonial parish of Santiago, which was founded just outside the historic centre of the former Inca capital. It is mostly residential now, and the map shows a dense, hard-working part of Cusco rather than its well-known squares, although the old centre is only a short distance away.
A Santiago map poster captures how a mountain city is built: flat, dense streets near the river, then looser lanes rising toward the ridges. At more than 3,300 metres above sea level, the landscape sets the layout here as much as any planner did, and that shows clearly in black and white.
