Santiago Tlacotepec lies in the municipality of Toluca in the State of Mexico. It sits on the high plateau south of the city, on land that rises gradually toward the Nevado de Toluca volcano. On the map the town appears as a loose grid of streets, denser at the centre and breaking up at the edges into plots and farmland.
As with many communities around Toluca, the town has old roots and a traditional centre around a church and square. It is also increasingly tied to the growing metropolitan area to the north. Roads link it to the city and to neighbouring villages, and urban development is gradually filling the land between them.
