Sāvantvādi lies in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, inland from the Konkan coast where the plain begins to rise towards the Western Ghats. Its most distinctive map feature sits right in the middle of town: Moti Talav, a lake with streets wrapped around its shore. The town was once the capital of a princely state, and its palace stands near the water.
