Shoreditch sits just north of the City of London, and its map is a mix of old street lines and later railway land. Old Street and its large roundabout mark the north-west, Shoreditch High Street runs north as part of an ancient road out of the City, and Great Eastern Street cuts diagonally between them. Brick Lane lies at its eastern edge.
The area has a long history of trades, furniture making and warehouses. In the sixteenth century it was home to some of London's first purpose-built playhouses, including The Theatre and The Curtain. In recent decades its converted buildings filled with studios and technology companies, giving the Old Street area the nickname Silicon Roundabout.
A Shoreditch map poster shows a district of angles rather than grids. Streets meet at sharp wedges, rail lines approach Liverpool Street from the north-east, and the roundabout at Old Street forms a clear knot in the upper corner of the composition.
