Sivakasi lies in Virudhunagar district in southern Tamil Nadu, on flat, dry plains east of the Western Ghats. From above, the town forms a dense core of narrow streets. Around it is a loose ring of industrial units and open plots, with roads leading to neighbouring towns. Irrigation tanks dot the land around it and hold water in a region with limited rainfall.
The town is known across India as the country's main centre for fireworks and safety matches, and it also has a large printing industry producing calendars, labels and books. This enterprise earned it the nickname Little Japan, often credited to Jawaharlal Nehru. Much of the local economy follows the rhythm of the festival season, especially the months before Diwali.
