Skanes lies on the coast just west of central Monastir. On the map it is mostly one long idea: the shoreline. Resort buildings and access roads follow the beach in a line, and a coastal road runs behind them. Inland, the street pattern becomes looser and gives way to open ground and olive-growing land.
The runway of Monastir's international airport is one of the most recognisable shapes in the area. It is a long, clean bar close to the sea, and any map of the district is organised around it. Because of this, many visitors arrive here before they see anywhere else in Tunisia.
