Slobodskoy stands on the Vyatka River in Kirov Oblast, a short way upstream from the regional capital. It is one of the older towns of the Vyatka lands, and from above its historic centre follows a regular pattern of streets laid out on the riverbank, with the broad, looping course of the Vyatka and its floodplain meadows shaping the edge of the town.
For centuries Slobodskoy was a trading town, and its merchants dealt in goods that moved along the river and the northern trade routes. The older part of town still carries the traces of that period in its churches and stone buildings, while later districts spread inland away from the water in wider, simpler blocks.
