Someshwar sits in the Western Ghats in Karnataka, where the coastal lowlands meet the escarpment. From above, the plan is loose rather than dense. A handful of roads meet near the centre, and houses and plots spread out along them. Wide patches of forest and farmland fill the gaps, so on paper the empty space counts as much as the lines.
The land shapes everything here. Streams run down from the higher ground, and the roads follow the valleys between them. Where the terrain gets steep, the lines start to bend and double back, which is typical of the ghat routes in this part of the state. The name is also shared with the Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected forest on these slopes.
