Stadthagen is a small town in the Schaumburg district of Lower Saxony, lying on level ground north of the Bückeberg hills. From above, the historic centre is clearly visible as a compact, rounded cluster of streets, with a market square at its heart and a ring of roads marking where the old boundary once stood.
The town was a residence of the Counts of Schaumburg, and their Renaissance castle, together with its grounds, occupies a distinct area beside the old centre. The Church of St. Martini, with the domed mausoleum of Prince Ernst attached to it, stands near the market and is one of the region's best-known monuments.
Beyond the old core, later neighbourhoods spread outward in looser patterns, and fields begin quickly at the edges. Close to the market stands the Church of St. Martini with the mausoleum of Prince Ernst, a landmark of the Weser Renaissance at the heart of the town.
