Toul Map Poster & Print
Toul lies in Meurthe-et-Moselle in the Grand Est region of northeastern France, on the Moselle river. The historic centre has an unusually sharp outline on the map. It is enclosed by bastioned fortifications designed under Vauban in the seventeenth century, and the angular walls and moats still largely define its edges. Inside the walls, the streets are compact and the Cathedral of Saint-Étienne rises at the centre.
Toul was one of the Three Bishoprics, together with Metz and Verdun, which gave it strategic weight for centuries. The Marne–Rhine Canal passes the town, and the Moselle curves nearby, so water frames the old centre on more than one side. The surrounding hills are planted with vines for the Côtes de Toul wines.
A Toul map poster is striking because of its fortified geometry. The star-shaped outline of the walls sits among the curves of river and canal, with the newer districts spreading out around them. Few towns of this size show their history so clearly from above, and in black and white the shapes become almost architectural.
