Velikiye Luki stands on the Lovat River in the south of Pskov Oblast, and the river shapes almost everything on its map. The Lovat winds through the city in broad bends. Districts sit on either side of the water, and several bridges carry the main streets across. The effect is a city organised around a single flowing line.
Beside the river rise the earthen walls of the fortress, rebuilt in the early eighteenth century on the orders of Peter the Great. The angular outline of its bastions is still visible from above. The city is also remembered for the long battle fought there in the winter of 1942–43, a significant engagement on the northern part of the Eastern Front.
