Vellore lies in northern Tamil Nadu on the southern bank of the Palar River, whose broad bed is usually more sand than water. From above, the centre of town is unmistakable. Vellore Fort, a sixteenth-century granite stronghold, sits within a wide moat whose angular outline stands out clearly among the surrounding streets. The Jalakandeswarar Temple stands inside its walls.
Around the fort, the town grew outward in a dense tangle of streets. Bare rocky hills rise on several sides, and the roads bend around them. Along the main roads, buildings and neighbourhoods run toward the university campuses and the newer suburbs. Beyond them, the land opens into farmland and scattered villages at the edge of the frame.
A Vellore map poster also captures the institutions that make the city known far beyond Tamil Nadu. Christian Medical College, founded by Ida Scudder in 1900, grew from a one-bed clinic into one of India's leading hospitals. VIT University draws students from across the country.
