Velp sits just east of Arnhem, where the wooded slopes of the Veluwe meet the lower land towards the IJssel. From above, the village forms a band of streets along the main road, with country estates and woodland pressing in from the north and open river land to the south.
It is part of the municipality of Rheden and is known for the historic estates that surround it. Kasteel Biljoen, a moated castle, stands on the village's edge, and the Veluwezoom National Park begins just to the north. The estates show up on the map as large, softly patterned areas of lanes and water features.
A Velp map poster shows the contrast between the regular streets of the village and the looser curves of its parks and woodland. The result is a map with a clear centre and a wide, green frame, typical of the villages that line the southern edge of the Veluwe.
