Vyatskiye Polyany stands on the Vyatka River in the south of Kirov Oblast, close to the border with Tatarstan. The town sits on the river's right bank, where the ground is higher, and its map shows streets stepping back from the water in fairly regular rows. On the opposite side the land is low and open, a broad floodplain of meadows, oxbow lakes and forest.
The town grew around the railway and its crossing of the Vyatka, and later around the Molot engineering works. During the Second World War the plant produced PPSh submachine guns in large numbers, and in the postwar decades it became known for the Vyatka motor scooter. Industrial areas still take up a large share of the map.
