Weinheim sits where the wooded ridge of the Odenwald drops sharply to the Upper Rhine plain, and the map shows that edge clearly. To the east, contour-bending roads climb into the hills. To the west, straighter streets and field boundaries run out across flat ground. The town fills the narrow band between the two, along the historic Bergstraße route.
The old centre is a tight knot of lanes around the market square, and the Weschnitz stream cuts through the lower town. Weinheim calls itself the Two Castles Town. The ruin of Windeck and the later Wachenburg both stand on the hillside above the rooftops, and on paper they read as small clusters of paths winding up out of the street grid.
