Winschoten lies in the east of Groningen province, close to the German border, and is the main town of the Oldambt region. The map shows a compact historic centre whose streets fan outward, surrounded first by later neighbourhoods and then by the flat, open farmland typical of this part of the Netherlands. Long drainage lines and canals divide the land into regular strips.
The town is known for its historic windmills, several of which still stand in or near the centre, and for its rosarium, a large public rose garden set in a park. These features add small but distinctive details to the map: the green outline of the gardens and the scattered points where the mills stand.
