Yüksekova lies in Hakkâri province in the far southeast of Turkey, close to the Iranian border. Its name means high plain, and that describes it well. The town stands on a wide, level basin at high altitude, surrounded by some of the most rugged mountains in the country. On a map this contrast is striking: a flat, open settlement framed by steep terrain.
Because the plain is so level, the town has been able to spread with fairly regular streets, unlike many mountain settlements that cling to slopes. Main roads cross the basin toward the provincial centre and the border. Streams and marshy ground on the plain add soft, irregular shapes around the edges of the built area.
The town is also served by an airport, a notable feature in such a remote mountain region.
