Zossen lies south of Berlin in Brandenburg, in a landscape of pine forest, lakes and flat sandy ground shaped by the last ice age. On a map the old town is a compact knot of streets around the centre, with newer housing spreading outward and a railway line running north toward the capital. Beyond the town, forest and water dominate the view.
The municipality includes Wünsdorf, which for much of the 20th century was one of Germany's most important military sites. It housed the German high command's bunker complexes during the Second World War and later became the headquarters of Soviet forces in East Germany until 1994. Today parts of the former garrison have been turned into a book town and residential areas.
A Zossen map poster can show both sides of this story: the quiet streets of the old town and the large, regular layout of the former military district to the south, set among lakes and forest.
