Bad Hersfeld lies in northeastern Hesse, in a wide valley where the Haune River flows into the Fulda. From above, the historic centre is an oval of narrow streets and small squares, still outlined by the course of its medieval walls, with newer districts and the spa gardens spreading along the valley and onto the wooded hills around it.
The town grew around a Benedictine abbey founded in the eighth century. The ruins of its Romanesque church, among the largest of their kind, stand next to the old town and serve each summer as the stage for the Bad Hersfeld Festival. The town also holds the Lullusfest, considered one of Germany's oldest folk festivals, and Konrad Duden once headed its grammar school.
