Corrente is near the southern tip of Piauí, close to the borders with Bahia and Tocantins. The surrounding land is cerrado, the tropical savanna of central Brazil, with wide horizons, scattered trees and a clear dry season. The town serves as a local centre for this remote corner of the state.
From above, Corrente has the layout of many towns in Brazil's interior: a central grid of blocks around a main square and church, with newer neighbourhoods added at the edges as the town grew. The river that shares its name runs nearby, adding one natural curve to an otherwise orderly map.
