Dĩ An lies just north of the older Ho Chi Minh City districts. It was part of Bình Dương Province before the 2025 reorganisation brought it into Ho Chi Minh City. The land is flat, and from above the city is a close pattern of factories, housing and roads, with highways and the North–South railway passing through.
Industrial zones take up large areas, their rectangular plots and wide service roads standing out against the smaller residential blocks. Part of the Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City campus lies within Dĩ An, and its open grounds and quiet roads offer a very different pattern from the dense city around it.
