Thuận An lies just north of central Ho Chi Minh City, on the western side bordered by the Saigon River, and its map shows a place in rapid change. Older roads and small lanes wind between former orchard land, while new residential areas and large industrial parks fill in with straighter, more regular shapes. Main roads run north through the city toward the rest of the former Bình Dương area.
The area around Lái Thiêu, one of its older districts, was long known for fruit orchards and ceramics. More recently Thuận An became a centre of manufacturing, with large industrial parks including the first Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park. Since 2025 it has been part of the enlarged Ho Chi Minh City.
