Thủ Dầu Một lies on the east bank of the Saigon River, north of central Ho Chi Minh City. For a long time it was the capital of Bình Dương province, and the map shows two cities side by side: a compact older town hugging the water, and to the east wide avenues and large planned blocks laid out as the area industrialised.
The river gives the city its western edge, a long meandering line with smaller channels and wetland branching off it. The town is historically known for crafts such as lacquerware and ceramics, while more recent decades brought industrial parks and a new administrative quarter built on a much larger scale than the old centre.
