Kalach lies in the south of Voronezh Oblast, in open steppe country that gives its name to the Kalach Upland, a raised plateau between the Don and its eastern tributaries. From above, the town is low and spread out, with a largely rectangular pattern of streets and private houses, each with a garden plot, extending out toward the fields.
A small river of the Don basin runs through the area, and its curving course and wooded banks break the regularity of the street pattern. Beyond the town the landscape is agricultural, divided into large fields with straight shelterbelts of trees, roads and tracks crossing the gently rolling land.
