Koszalin lies in West Pomerania in northern Poland, about a dozen kilometres inland from the Baltic coast. From above, the compact old town sits at the centre, encircled by wider streets, with newer districts spreading outward. The wooded Chełmska Hill rises to the east, and Lake Jamno stretches toward the sea to the northwest, separated from it by a narrow strip of dunes.
The old town grew around the Gothic cathedral and market square, and fragments of the medieval city walls still survive. Chełmska Hill, topped by a television tower and a Marian shrine, has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries and is the city's natural high point. The small Dzierżęcinka river winds through the centre on its way to Lake Jamno.
