Bydgoszcz grew up along the Brda, which flows through the centre from west to east before joining the Vistula just outside the city. On the map, the river is the main organising line, with the old town on its southern bank. In the centre, the Brda divides around Mill Island, a small green island with historic mills and museums, one of the city's most distinctive features.
To the west, the Bydgoszcz Canal leaves the Brda and heads toward the Noteć, part of an eighteenth-century waterway linking the Vistula and Oder basins. Its locks and tree-lined banks form a long, straight line across the map. North of the river, the downtown streets form a denser grid known for late nineteenth and early twentieth-century architecture.
