Mmopone lies in the Kweneng District of Botswana, on the north-western edge of the Gaborone area. It is one of several villages that have grown quickly as the capital's influence spreads outward. On the map that growth is visible in the regular, freshly laid plots and straight roads of the newer sections, extending out from an older, less formal village core.
The surrounding land is flat to gently rolling bushveld, dry for much of the year.
