Montijo lies in the province of Badajoz, in the Vegas Bajas del Guadiana, the broad irrigated lowland that follows the river between Mérida and Badajoz. On a map the town appears as a fairly compact core of streets surrounded on almost every side by agricultural land, where irrigation channels and field boundaries draw long straight lines across the flat valley floor.
The Guadiana itself runs to the south of the town, a wider and softer line than the man-made grid of canals and farm tracks around it.
