Santa Pola lies on the Costa Blanca, south of Alicante, where the coast turns around a headland. The town wraps around a harbour and beaches, with a cape and lighthouse rising to the east. From above, the streets form a fairly regular grid behind the waterfront, spreading along the shore and up toward the higher ground of the cape.
To the west, the Salinas de Santa Pola, a protected natural park of salt pans and lagoons, are known for flamingos and other waterbirds. Their rectangular basins make a striking pattern on the map. Santa Pola also has one of the larger fishing fleets on this coast, and boats leave from the harbour for the small island of Tabarca.
