Severskaya is a stanitsa, a traditional Cossack settlement, in Krasnodar Krai in southern Russia, south-west of Krasnodar. It lies where the flat Kuban plain begins to meet the northern foothills of the Caucasus, and from above the settlement is laid out in long, regular streets with deep residential plots.
This pattern is typical of the stanitsas of the region. Streets run parallel for long distances, crossed by others at right angles, and each block contains houses with large gardens behind them. On a map, this creates a very clear grid with a strong rhythm of repeated lines.
