South Jordan lies in the south-western part of the Salt Lake Valley in Utah, between the Jordan River to the east and the Oquirrh Mountains to the west. Like much of the valley, its structure follows the pioneer-era grid: major roads at regular intervals running due north–south and east–west, dividing the city into large square sections.
Inside those squares the map changes character. Older eastern neighbourhoods near the river mix farm-era lots with suburban streets, while the western side is dominated by Daybreak, a large master-planned community built since the early 2000s around a man-made lake, Oquirrh Lake. Its curving streets, parks and TRAX light rail line form a distinct pattern within the grid.
The city is also home to the Jordan River Utah Temple and the Oquirrh Mountain Utah Temple, landmarks for many residents.
