Steenwijk lies in the north of Overijssel, close to the borders with Friesland and Drenthe. On a map its historic centre is unmistakable: a compact old town enclosed by the traces of former fortifications, with ramparts and bastions whose angular shapes remain visible in the line of parks, water and streets around the core. Steenwijk is one of the Netherlands' fortified towns, and parts of its old earthen walls survive as green ramparts that can be walked today.
