Targovishte lies in northeastern Bulgaria, where the plain meets the foothills of the eastern Balkan range. The small Vrana River runs through the town, and the street network spreads on both sides of it. From above, a compact central area sits among newer residential districts, with wooded hills rising beyond the edges.
The town was historically known as Eski Dzhumaya and was famous for a large annual fair, which the modern name, from the word for trade, still recalls. Its Varosha quarter preserves houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period. On a map, Varosha shows as a pocket of narrow, irregular lanes near the centre.
