Tocancipá lies on the high plain north of Bogotá, in Cundinamarca, along the main road toward Zipaquirá and Boyacá. From above, it has a small colonial-style centre built around a square, residential areas spreading out from it, and large industrial and logistics sites beside the highway. The surrounding sabana is flat and cut into fields and greenhouses, with hills rising at the edges.
In recent decades, the town's position on the northern corridor has brought factories, warehouses and new housing, so the built-up area has spread well beyond its original core. Two well-known attractions are here: the Parque Jaime Duque, a large theme park, and the Autódromo de Tocancipá, a motor-racing circuit.
