Le faʻafanua
Bathinda sits on the open plain of southwestern Punjab. From above it reads as a compact old core surrounded by newer sectors laid out in looser rectangles. There are no hills to bend the streets, so the pattern is set by what people built: railway tracks, canal channels and the roads that have spread outward as the city expanded into farmland.
At the heart of the old town stands Qila Mubarak, a brick fort counted among the oldest surviving in India and remembered as the place where Razia Sultan was held in the thirteenth century. Around it the lanes tighten into an irregular knot, a clear contrast to the measured blocks of the planned colonies further out.
Bathinda is also one of the larger railway junctions in northern India, and the lines leaving the station in several directions give the map a starburst quality. On a Bathinda map poster these tracks, the thin canal lines and the patchwork of residential sectors combine into a drawing that feels both orderly and quietly industrious.
The fort's footprint anchors the old city, a dense cluster of lanes gathered around a structure whose history reaches back well over a thousand years.
Tracks converge on Bathinda from several directions, drawing long straight lines across the plain that meet near the centre like the spokes of an uneven wheel.
Irrigation channels cut clean lines through the surrounding fields, and the reservoirs on the edge of town appear as smooth, solid shapes against the fine texture of the streets.
