Bishop Auckland is a market town in County Durham, on high ground above the meeting of the River Wear and the River Gaunless. That setting shapes its map. The historic centre gathers around a broad Market Place on a ridge, and streets drop toward the rivers on either side. For centuries Auckland Castle was a residence of the Prince Bishops of Durham, which gave the town its name and its standing.
