Le faʻafanua
Immokalee lies in the interior of Collier County, far from the Gulf coast resorts most people associate with southwest Florida. The land is flat, and the town shows it: a largely rectilinear grid of streets around a few main roads, with blocks that give way at the edges to large, rectangular farm fields. Lake Trafford sits just to the west as a broad, rounded shape.
The name is usually translated from the Mikasuki language as my home. Immokalee is one of the main centres of winter vegetable farming in the United States, especially tomatoes, and much of its population works in agriculture. The town is also known for the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, whose Fair Food Program has changed labour standards on many Florida farms.
An Immokalee map poster shows a place defined by its surroundings. The street grid is compact, but the fields around it are vast, and their straight edges carry the same geometry outward. With Lake Trafford and the wetlands to the west, the map balances ordered rows with the softer shapes of water and marsh.
Streets run mostly north–south and east–west in a regular pattern. It reflects the flat interior terrain and the practical way the town grew up around its farms.
West of town, Lake Trafford forms a large, roughly oval body of water, one of the largest lakes in southwest Florida. The wetland around its edge softens the lines on the map.
Beyond the edge of town, farm fields form large rectangles and long straight tracks. They extend the grid outward until it meets swamp and preserve land.
