A long, straight Pacific shoreline, a harbour dug out of the land and a dark shrine forest, with lake water along the western edge.

Le faʻafanua
Kashima-shi lies along the Ibaraki coast, where the Kashima-nada shore runs almost ruler-straight to the south. On a map the city is a narrow band of land between two waters: the open Pacific to the east and Lake Kitaura to the west. Main roads and rail lines run lengthwise down the middle, and smaller streets fill the flat, sandy ground on either side.
The most striking shape from above is the port. It is a harbour cut inland from the coast to serve the Kashima coastal industrial zone, and its long basins and branching quays make clean geometric figures. Those hard lines stand out against the softer outlines of farmland, pine belts and the older settlement further north.
That older centre grew up around Kashima Jingu, one of the oldest Shinto shrines in eastern Japan, whose wooded grounds show up as a dense patch among the streets. The city is also home to the Kashima Antlers football club, whose stadium hosted matches at the 2002 World Cup. A Kashima-shi map poster fits shrine, stadium, harbour and shore into one frame.
An unbroken, gently curving coastline runs the length of the city, a single clean edge where the street pattern stops and open water begins.
The industrial port was dug into the land rather than built out into the sea, leaving straight-sided basins and quays that read almost like a technical drawing.
The shrine's old woodland makes a compact mass of green around its approach roads, a quiet counterweight to the grid of the harbour district.

Aisea Kashima-shi
This map suits Antlers supporters, people who have worked at the port and families with roots on the Ibaraki coast. It holds a clear sense of place: two waters, one long strip of land, and a harbour shaped by engineers rather than by nature.
You can set the title to Kashima or the name of a neighbourhood, add a meaningful date as the subtitle and keep or edit the coordinates line. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the engineered lines of the harbour especially well.
