Le faʻafanua
Laredo lies on the north bank of the Rio Grande, directly across from Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas. On the map, the river forms a winding line through the middle of a single urban area divided between two countries. International bridges cross it at several points, and the older streets of downtown Laredo reach almost to the riverbank in a compact grid.
The city is one of the most important trade crossings between the United States and Mexico, and Interstate 35 begins here before running north toward San Antonio and beyond. The historic centre around San Agustín Plaza keeps some of the oldest streets and buildings in the region. From there, newer districts spread north and east along highways and rail lines.
A Laredo map poster places the river at the centre of the story. The grid of downtown, the long highway corridors, the rail yards and the bridges show a city built around movement and exchange. In black and white, the Rio Grande becomes a pale curve dividing two street networks that still look, from above, like one continuous place.
The river winds between Laredo and Nuevo Laredo, forming both an international boundary and the natural line around which the city is organised.
Several bridges cross the river, including routes for cars, trucks and rail, connecting the two cities at different points along the border.
The historic centre near San Agustín Plaza has compact blocks close to the river, from which main roads lead north into newer districts.
