Le faʻafanua
McAllen sits in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, a few miles north of the river and the Mexican border, facing Reynosa on the other side. The land is almost entirely flat. The city has grown along a regular grid of roads spaced a mile apart, a legacy of the surveys that once divided the valley into citrus groves and irrigated fields.
Expressway 83 crosses the city from east to west, and major roads such as 10th Street run north through shopping and residential districts. Irrigation canals left over from the farming era still cut diagonal and curving lines through the grid. On a detailed map they are among the most distinctive marks. To the south, international bridges connect the area with Mexico.
A McAllen map poster turns that structure into something graphic: square after square of streets, the heavy line of the expressway, and the irregular edge where the town meets the river country. The city is known for its winter visitors, cross-border shopping and palm-lined streets, but from above it is a study in order on open ground.
Main roads sit a mile apart, following the old farm surveys, so the map reads as a series of large squares filled with smaller residential streets.
The east–west expressway runs straight across the city and on to the neighbouring valley towns. It is a bold horizontal line that anchors the composition.
Canals built for the valley's citrus and vegetable farms still run through the neighbourhoods. Their thin, angled lines break up the otherwise strict geometry of the grid.

Aisea McAllen
The Rio Grande Valley is a place of family ties that stretch across the border, and McAllen is often home base. A map of the city can mark a childhood address, a first job, or the winters spent somewhere warm.
Set the title, subtitle and coordinates line yourself, perhaps with a neighbourhood name or a moving date. Then pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download the HD files for $9 or order a print.
