Le faʻafanua
Maiquetía sits on the Caribbean coast north of Caracas, on the thin band of flat land between the sea and the mountains of the Cordillera de la Costa. The Ávila massif rises sharply behind it and separates the coast from the capital, which lies in a high valley on the other side. On a map this gives the town a long, compressed shape.
The most striking feature is the Simón Bolívar International Airport, Venezuela's main international gateway, whose runways and terminals stretch along the coast. The town's streets pack into the space around it, climbing a short way up the lower slopes before the terrain becomes too steep. A highway connects the coast to Caracas through tunnels and viaducts across the mountains.
A Maiquetía map poster captures that tension between sea, flat land and mountain. The straight lines of the runways contrast with the irregular coastline and the tight, winding streets on the slopes. In black and white the empty space of the sea on one side and the mountain on the other frames a place that many people first see from an aircraft window.

The town occupies a narrow band of flat land between the Caribbean Sea and the mountains, giving it a long, compressed shape.
Behind the coast, steep slopes rise toward the Ávila, and the streets that climb them wind and narrow quickly before giving way to the open hillside.
