Le faʻafanua
Miki lies inland in southern Hyōgo, north of Kobe, where lowland gives way to low hills. On a map the town centre follows a river valley, with a denser grid of streets near the old castle site and the station. Beyond it, the plan opens out into farmland, reservoirs, wooded ridges and newer residential areas laid out on the higher ground.
Miki has a long reputation for metalwork. Its smiths have made carpentry tools, saws, chisels, planes and blades for centuries, and the city is still known in Japan for this hardware tradition. The castle hill recalls a darker episode: in the late sixteenth century Toyotomi Hideyoshi besieged Miki Castle for about two years, cutting off its supplies until the garrison surrendered.
Today a private railway links Miki with Kobe, and expressways cross the surrounding countryside. The hills around the town hold many golf courses, whose fairways appear as smooth, curving clearings in the woods. A Miki map poster shows a valley town with its older core, the ridges around it and the reservoirs in between, a quieter kind of Japanese town plan.

The older streets near the centre grew around generations of blacksmiths and toolmakers, whose saws, chisels and planes made Miki a familiar name among carpenters.
Farm ponds, wooded ridges and clearings for golf courses surround the town, forming irregular shapes that contrast with the built-up valley.

Aisea Miki
A Miki map fits the workshop of a woodworker who uses tools from the town, or the home of someone who grew up in its valley. The mix of dense centre and open hills gives the print plenty of variation without clutter.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with a family name or a date, and edit the coordinates line if you like. Choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper suits the calm of the countryside.
