Le faʻafanua
Minamiminowa is a village in the Kamiina district of Nagano Prefecture, set in the long Ina Valley between the Central Alps to the west and the Southern Alps to the east. The Tenryū River, which flows south from Lake Suwa, runs along the valley floor. The village spreads up the gently rising western terraces, where fields, housing and roads share the slope.
With close to sixteen thousand residents, Minamiminowa is one of Japan's more populous villages. It has grown steadily as a quiet residential area near Ina and Tatsuno. The Faculty of Agriculture of Shinshu University has its campus here, and its fields and research forest add large, open parcels to an otherwise fine-grained pattern of homes and rice paddies.
A Minamiminowa map poster shows a place defined by its valley. The Tenryū draws a clear line along one side, and roads run parallel to it before climbing westward in steps. Scattered residential blocks and field boundaries fill the space between. Mountain valleys give the whole composition a strong sense of direction, running north to south with slopes rising on both sides.
The river follows the floor of the Ina Valley. Its long, gently curving line marks the eastern side of the village and anchors the whole map.
The land steps up from the river toward the Central Alps in broad terraces, so rows of roads and field boundaries run parallel to the valley.
Shinshu University's agriculture campus occupies a large, open area whose fields and forest plots break up the finer residential pattern around them.
