Cape Muroto point
The land narrows to a point facing the Pacific. It is one of the clearest coastal silhouettes in Japan, and the rugged shoreline makes a strong line on the map.

Le faʻafanua
Muroto-misakicho lies near Cape Muroto, the sharp southeastern point of Shikoku in Kochi Prefecture. Mountains come down almost to the water here. Houses, roads and harbours squeeze into the narrow shelf between the slopes and the open Pacific. From above, the town is more a line than a shape, following the curve of the shore.
The cape is known for its geology. Uplifted rock platforms and exposed strata along the coast are part of the Muroto UNESCO Global Geopark. The area also matters to the Shikoku pilgrimage: Hotsumisaki-ji, one of its temples, stands on the heights above the cape, and the seaside caves where the monk Kūkai is said to have meditated draw pilgrims and visitors.
A Muroto-misakicho map poster shows how completely the coastline shapes the place. The coast road hugs the rocky shore, small harbours notch into it, and paths and roads climb into the forested hills. The ocean, left empty, becomes a large calm field, and the thin band of settlement traces the edge of the land.
The land narrows to a point facing the Pacific. It is one of the clearest coastal silhouettes in Japan, and the rugged shoreline makes a strong line on the map.
Streets and buildings run in a thin, continuous band along the shore. There is little room between the sea and the steep slopes rising behind.
Roads and paths wind up from the coast to the temple grounds above the cape. They are part of the route walked by pilgrims circling Shikoku.
